After an eight-year absence from Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas lineup, Lori Loughlin is returning with a new holiday movie that explores love, life choices and the possibility of an entirely different future.
Titled What If Christmas, the film premieres October 25 on Hallmark Channel. Loughlin stars as Erin, a devoted wife whose world changes after her husband, Adam, played by Tom Cavanagh, moves to a new hospital. As Erin struggles to find her footing, she begins wondering what might have happened if she had pursued her long-held dream of becoming a fashion designer.
Her life takes an unexpected turn when she receives a heart-shaped Christmas ornament and wakes up in an alternate reality where she has become a world-famous fashion designer.
For Loughlin, the project has been years in the making. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, the actress revealed that she first encountered the script three or four years ago and initially tried to bring the story to another destination before returning to Hallmark.
“I read the initial draft of this script probably 3-4 years ago, and I was trying to get it made somewhere else before I went back to Hallmark, and it just didn’t come to fruition,” she explained.
When Hallmark expressed interest in developing a Christmas movie after her return, Loughlin remembered the project and reached out to producer Brad Krevoy, a longtime collaborator who had purchased the script when she first read it and still held the rights.
They submitted it to Hallmark, where the concept received a positive response. Writer Julie was subsequently brought in to revise the screenplay, helping the project move forward.

Lori Loughlin Finds an Onscreen Connection With Tom Cavanagh
What If Christmas also marks the first time Loughlin and Cavanagh have worked together. Although she had admired his work for years, particularly his performance in the television series Ed, the two had never shared a project before this film.
Loughlin praised her co-star, describing him as a wonderful person and a talented actor. She said they connected immediately and developed strong chemistry on set.
For the actress, that connection helped elevate the experience of making the movie. She noted that having an easy rapport with a scene partner can take a project to another level.
Beyond the alternate-reality premise, Loughlin was especially drawn to the relationship at the heart of the story. Erin and Adam’s love remains central regardless of which version of their lives they inhabit.
“I think you could see that these two characters in both lives loved each other, cared about each other, had feelings for each other,” she said.
That enduring bond gives the Christmas movie an emotional foundation, allowing the story to examine the paths people choose without losing sight of the relationships that matter most.

A New Chapter in Lori Loughlin’s Hallmark Return
What If Christmas is another step in Loughlin’s renewed relationship with Hallmark. She recently returned to the network’s Garage Sale Mysteries franchise, and she is also scheduled to reprise her role in When Calls the Heart Season 14 in 2027.
With its mix of holiday magic, romantic chemistry and a second-chance premise, What If Christmas brings Loughlin back to the seasonal programming that helped make her a familiar face to Hallmark audiences.
What If Christmas premieres October 25 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Hallmark Channel.
