Jessica Biel is ready to bring 7th Heaven into a new era, promising a reboot that retains the original series’ family-friendly spirit while taking a more direct approach to the challenges facing teenagers and their families today.
Biel, who played Mary Camden in the original drama, is returning to the franchise as an executive producer. During an October interview with Collider Ladies Night, she discussed how the upcoming reboot will update the beloved series for contemporary audiences.
The original 7th Heaven followed Reverend Eric Camden, his wife Annie and their seven children as they navigated family life and personal challenges. While the show addressed difficult subjects during its 11-season run from 1996 to 2007, Biel believes the new version will have more freedom to explore those issues in depth.
“What we want to create, how we want to modernize it, is really the things that are happening for teenagers and families that have teenagers all the way down to the youngest child — technology-based issues, school stuff, bullying stuff, drugs, alcohol,” she explained.
The actress, now 44, said the reboot intends to approach these topics in a realistic way. She acknowledged that the original series had to work within certain limitations and carefully consider what its audience expected.
Now, she believes the creative team has greater flexibility to tell these stories.
“We still want to keep the DNA of what it was, where you can sit down and watch with your families, but we’re not going to hold back, I think, as much as we did before,” Biel said.

Jessica Biel Prioritizes a Safe and Creative Environment
Although the reboot will explore contemporary issues more openly, Biel emphasized that preserving the essence of 7th Heaven remains important. The goal is to maintain the show’s accessible, family-oriented identity while giving its characters and stories greater room to confront difficult realities.
Biel also made clear that she will not reprise her role as Mary Camden. Instead, her focus as an executive producer is on supporting the people bringing the new series to life.
She wants to establish an environment where cast and crew members feel comfortable taking creative risks and delivering emotionally vulnerable performances.
Reflecting on her current work as a producer, Biel noted that many of the projects she is involved with require performers to expose deeply personal emotions. Without a supportive atmosphere, she believes it can be difficult for actors to reach that level of authenticity.
“A lot of the stuff that I’m doing now, the content that I’m doing now, it’s emotional stuff,” she explained, describing the importance of allowing people to put themselves on the line emotionally.
She added that creating a protected, supportive environment is a responsibility she continually considers as a producer, ensuring that everyone feels cared for and safe enough to do their best work.

What to Know About the ‘7th Heaven’ Reboot
The original series featured Stephen Collins as Reverend Eric Camden, Catherine Hicks as Annie Camden, Beverley Mitchell as Lucy, Mackenzie Rosman as Ruthie, David Gallagher as Simon and Barry Watson as Matt. Lorenzo Brino and Nikolas Brino also appeared as twins Sam and David, among others.
The reboot aims to carry forward the show’s focus on family while addressing issues shaped by today’s technology, schools and social pressures.
As of October 25, 2026, no premiere date has been announced. For now, Biel’s comments offer an early look at the direction of the revival: a familiar family drama that intends to preserve its original heart while approaching modern challenges with fewer restrictions.
The original 7th Heaven is available to stream on Paramount+.
