For fans of Red, White & Royal Blue, the prospect of Texas turning blue in this election cycle may feel like a familiar storyline.

Casey McQuiston’s 2019 romance novel centres on Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the first female president of the United States, and Prince Henry.

Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine portray Alex and Henry, respectively. What begins as a friendship arranged for the media gradually develops into a secret romance, putting Alex’s mother’s re-election campaign at risk.

However, the detail that has particularly caught fans’ attention is Alex’s secret undertaking during his mother’s re-election campaign: an ambitious effort to turn their home state of Texas blue.

The rest of the story is best discovered by reading the book or watching the film. However, author Casey McQuiston has already been sharing their sense of vindication through a series of posts on Instagram Stories.

Very, very vindicated…

After reposting a series of online reactions along the lines of “told you so”, McQuiston added a more serious message, writing: “it’s been fun to hee he and ha ha but in all seriousness let this remind u to love and celebrate and empower progressive leftists in historically red states and especially the south.”

“I didn’t pull blexas out of my ass 10 years ago i simply looked around and saw it,” they concluded.

The film has sparked plenty of reactions from fans and social media users, with one viewer joking after watching it that “Texas being blue is the most unrealistic thing about this.”

Tweet that reads, "I swear, I watched the movie and thought 'Texas being blue is the most unrealistic thing about this'. Well... I was a fool. And I'm happy with that."

Casey McQuiston, in particular, has reason to feel especially vindicated.

Fans have been celebrating them as the centre of attention, hailing them as icons.

The official Democratic TikTok account also drew attention after posting screenshots of AO3 fanfiction folders stored on Google Drive. However, the material was shared without permission from many of the authors, prompting warnings against accessing the links.

Vindication!!

Although Alex is technically bisexual, with coming to terms with his sexuality forming a major part of his storyline in the book, that distinction does not necessarily change the broader point.

Yeah, all these people should be questioning themselves right about now.

It certainly wasn’t on my bingo card, either.

Above all else, though, Casey McQuiston should be proud to be a part of this legacy.
