Stephen Graham has delivered some of British television’s most memorable performances, but one of his most compelling roles can be found in a gripping five-part drama that deserves far more attention. The Walk-In is a tense, unsettling series inspired by real events, exploring the dangers of far-right extremism and one man’s determination to prevent another act of political violence.

First released in 2022, the ITV drama stars Graham as Matthew Collins, a former neo-Nazi who has turned his life around and now works as an activist and journalist for the anti-racist organisation Hope not Hate. Having once been involved in the extremist movement himself, Collins understands how these groups operate and is determined to expose their activities before they can cause further harm.
The story takes place against the backdrop of growing political division in Britain. After the murder of MP Jo Cox in 2016, concerns about far-right extremism became even more urgent. Collins becomes increasingly focused on a dangerous organisation known as National Action, which continues to operate despite efforts to expose and dismantle it.

Everything changes when Robbie Mullen, a young man connected to the group, comes forward with information about a potential assassination plot targeting another politician. Collins must navigate a dangerous situation, protect his source and help prevent the threat from becoming reality.
Alongside Graham, the series features Andrew Ellis as Robbie Mullen, Jason Flemyng and Dean-Charles Chapman. Written by Jeff Pope and directed by Paul Andrew Williams, the production combines political tension with a deeply human story about redemption, courage and the consequences of extremism.
What makes The Walk-In particularly compelling is its real-world foundation. Rather than relying solely on fictional suspense, the series examines how ordinary individuals can become caught up in dangerous movements — and how one person’s decision to speak out can make a difference.
For viewers who enjoy serious British crime dramas with a powerful story behind them, this five-episode series is well worth discovering. It is available to stream for free with adverts on ITVX in the UK.
