Cate McHugh gave a deeply moving performance of The Beatles’ timeless classic “Blackbird” during the grand final of The Voice UK 2026. With a delicate, heartfelt delivery, the Welsh singer brought a beautiful sense of emotion to the song, reminding viewers that sometimes the most powerful performances are the ones that speak quietly but stay with you long after the music ends.

Her choice of song carried an especially personal significance when viewed against the journey that brought her to the final. Cate began singing at a young age, took to the streets of Cardiff to busk as a teenager and later spent years performing on cruise ships. At 22, she was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a degenerative eye condition that has left her registered blind. Yet music remained central to her life, giving her a place where she could fully immerse herself in the moment. She has explained that when she is on stage, with the lights down on the audience, she does not think about her sight loss.

Throughout the competition, Cate was mentored by Sir Tom Jones, who encouraged her to concentrate on the story behind every song rather than getting caught up in the performance itself. That advice seemed particularly fitting for “Blackbird”, a song whose enduring message of hope and resilience gave Cate an opportunity to connect with listeners on an emotional level. Her rendition felt sincere and personal, allowing the feeling behind the music to take centre stage.

The performance became even more memorable when Cate was ultimately crowned the winner of The Voice UK 2026. Her victory also gave Sir Tom Jones a remarkable send-off, marking his final season as a regular coach on the programme. After guiding Cate from her blind audition to the championship, he had every reason to celebrate the moment alongside her.

From busking on the streets of Cardiff to winning one of Britain’s best-known singing competitions, Cate’s journey is a reminder of what dedication and a lifelong love of music can make possible. Her performance of “Blackbird” was more than a beautiful Beatles cover — it was a heartfelt moment from a singer who had finally reached a stage she had worked towards for years.
