A Horror Series With Smiling Monsters And A Town Nobody Can Escape Has Critics Calling It ‘One Of The Best Shows On TV

Horror fans in the UK could soon have a new reason to open Netflix, as acclaimed series From is set to join the streaming service. An official release date has yet to be announced, although the show arrived on Netflix in the US earlier this month. For now, it appears in the platform’s “worth the wait” section.

The series features Harold Perrineau, known for Lost, alongside Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Elizabeth Saunders, Ricky He and Corteon Moore. Created by John Griffin, From also has Marvel filmmakers Anthony and Joe Russo on board as executive producers.

At the heart of From is an unnamed town that defies explanation. It doesn’t appear on any map, none of its residents were born there, and anyone who arrives soon discovers that leaving may be impossible.

The danger becomes even more terrifying after dark. The show’s synopsis warns: “Perpetually smiling, malevolent monsters live in the surrounding forest, and they’ll tear you limb from limb if you wander outside after the sun goes down.”

Harold Perrineau stars as Boyd Stevens, the town’s self-appointed sheriff, who works to protect its trapped inhabitants. His world is disrupted when the Matthews family and Jade Herrera, a tech entrepreneur, arrive in the mysterious settlement and find themselves unable to escape.

As the newcomers attempt to adjust to their strange surroundings, they begin uncovering secrets that raise even more questions. The synopsis continues: “As the Matthews and Jade settle into their new, rather purgatorial home, they slowly unearth its many secrets while also adapting to ever-changing circumstances seemingly brought on by their arrival.

“Something seems to be rewriting the established rules of this town. Are the unknown forces at play too powerful to ever truly escape — or can they find a way out once and for all?”

Since its debut in 2022, From has earned strong reviews from critics. Common Sense Media praised the show’s blend of mystery and horror, writing: “It’s refreshing to see a high-concept, puzzle-type show feature so many horror elements, and the special effects in this series are suitably gross and chilling.”

The Anatomy of a Scream Podcast Network went even further in its praise, naming From “one of the best shows on TV,” and describing it as: “It’s a terrifying puzzle that continuously raises the stakes. It is anchored by an amazing cast of characters that the series has no problem killing off when the time is right.”

Given Harold Perrineau’s role in Lost, comparisons between the two series have been difficult to avoid. However, Empire suggested that From offers plenty to enjoy beyond the similarities, writing: “Shrugging off the Lost comparisons for the most part, there is plenty of entertainment to be found in From – even if it occasionally feels more generic than some of its inspirations.”

Starburst also drew parallels with the mystery-driven drama, noting: “In the same vein as Lost, every answer we get leads to more questions. It’s an addiction that TV writers tend to try and capture, and From has successfully done just that.”

From is coming to Netflix in the UK.
