If you’re searching for your next addictive crime drama, Animal Kingdom could be the series that keeps you glued to the screen. With six seasons packed with dangerous family rivalries, daring robberies and jaw-dropping twists, the gripping show offers a dark look at a criminal dynasty where trust can be just as dangerous as betrayal.

The story follows Joshua “J” Cody, a teenager whose life is turned upside down after the death of his mother. With nowhere else to go, he moves in with his estranged relatives in Southern California, led by his formidable grandmother, Janine “Smurf” Cody.

At first, the Cody family appears to offer him a place to belong. But J soon discovers that their luxurious lifestyle is funded by a series of carefully planned criminal operations. Smurf is the mastermind behind the family business, while her adult sons each bring their own dangerous personalities and unpredictable behaviour to the table.

As J becomes increasingly involved in their world, he must learn how to survive among people who are bound by blood but constantly divided by jealousy, ambition and suspicion.

The series features an impressive cast, including Finn Cole as J, Ellen Barkin as the manipulative Smurf, Shawn Hatosy as the troubled Pope, Ben Robson as Craig and Jake Weary as Deran.

What makes Animal Kingdom particularly compelling is its exploration of family loyalty. Beneath the spectacular robberies and violent confrontations lies a complicated story about control, childhood trauma and the destructive relationships that can develop within a family.

Across its six seasons and 75 episodes, the tension continues to build as secrets emerge, alliances shift and the Cody family’s criminal empire faces increasingly dangerous threats.

Originally developed for TNT, the series concluded in 2022, giving viewers a complete story to binge rather than leaving them waiting for another season.

For anyone who enjoys crime dramas such as Ozark or Peaky Blinders, Animal Kingdom delivers a similarly intense mix of criminal ambition, complicated characters and unexpected twists. And with the Cody family at the centre of the chaos, there’s rarely a quiet moment.
