Hacksaw Ridge stands among the most impressive performances in Andrew Garfield’s film career. Following his rise to international fame as Spider-Man, the 33-year-old actor took on a very different challenge, portraying real-life World War II combat medic Desmond Doss. A devout man who refused to carry a weapon because of his religious convictions, Doss faced hostility from fellow soldiers and military superiors. However, when his unit came under attack at Hacksaw Ridge, he demonstrated extraordinary courage by rescuing 75 men without carrying a gun.

Directed by Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge received widespread critical praise following its 2016 release, with Garfield’s moving portrayal of Doss attracting particular attention. The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, although he ultimately lost to Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea. Garfield returned to the category in 2021 with Tick, Tick… Boom!, but this time the award went to Will Smith for King Richard (though that was hardly the biggest story of the night).
