After spending 11 years believing he had lost his daughter forever, Ian’s world is turned upside down in the opening episodes of Last Seen. A mysterious phone call at the end of Episode 2 gives the former detective a reason to believe that Maggie, the daughter he thought was gone, may still be alive.
But is Ian following the evidence or simply clinging to the hope that has kept him going for more than a decade?

A father’s life unravels after Maggie’s disappearance
Adapted from Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher, the Apple TV thriller follows Ian, played by Patrick Brammall, 11 years after his young daughter disappeared.
Ian’s life has fallen apart in the years since. Once a police detective, he is now working as a dispatcher. He is divorced, six months sober and still burdened by guilt over the night Maggie vanished.
Ian and Maggie’s mother had gone out dancing while their three-year-old daughter was left at home with her 16-year-old half-brother, Dean. When remains are later discovered and initially believed to possibly belong to Maggie, Ian begins drinking again.
However, the discovery ultimately brings an unexpected twist: the remains are not his daughter’s.
That revelation reopens a possibility Ian has never fully been able to let go of.
The phone call that changes everything

Elsewhere in the series, a teenage girl named Sarah, played by Chloe Jean Lourdes, is being raised in isolation by Henry and Jenna. Security measures around their property suggest that something about Sarah’s life is being deliberately hidden from the outside world.
After discovering part of a flyer connected to Maggie’s disappearance, Sarah begins investigating her own past.
She eventually sneaks away and ends up at a party, where fragments of memory begin to surface. One particularly important detail is her recollection of carving the name “Mags” into a piece of wood — the same nickname Ian once used for Maggie.
Sarah later reaches a phone booth and calls 000 for help.
Ian answers.
When he asks her name, she initially identifies herself as Sarah before hesitating and adding: “Maybe it’s Mags.”
Ian immediately tells her that he is her father and races to find her. By the time he arrives, however, she has disappeared.
Is Sarah really Maggie?
Executive producer and writer Kris Mrksa has made it clear that Sarah’s identity remains part of the central mystery.
Rather than building the series around a traditional question of who committed a crime, Last Seen is more interested in uncovering how the situation came to exist, why it happened and how the lives of the people involved became connected.
According to Mrksa, the truth about Sarah will eventually become clearer. But the larger mystery lies in understanding the circumstances surrounding her life and the events that brought everyone together.
For Ian, however, the phone call is enough to reignite something he has carried with him for years: the belief that Maggie could somehow return.
Hope may be stronger than logic

Mrksa explained that Ian has always held onto the possibility that his daughter might still be alive, even as his life spiralled following her disappearance.
That hope became a kind of lifeline for him.
So when Sarah calls and suggests that she may be “Mags,” Ian desperately wants to believe her. His instincts as a former police officer may tell him that the situation is far from straightforward, but emotionally, he is already prepared to accept the possibility.
The producer described Ian’s reaction as a conflict between rational thinking and the hope he has never been able to abandon.
For someone whose life has been defined by the loss of his daughter, even the smallest sign that Maggie might be alive is enough to pull him back in completely.
Whether Sarah truly is Maggie remains one of Last Seen’s biggest questions. But after that phone call, Ian is no longer simply hoping for answers — he is becoming consumed by the possibility that his daughter may finally be within reach.
